Stair-Step Cracking in Lewisport, KY

A retaining wall was pulling away from the home foundation and taking the corner block with it, causing stair-step cracking on the wall. The family in Lewisport, KY knew what they needed and came to us for advice on how and where the issue needed to be repaired. Retaining walls are structures that hold back or retain soil, water, and other materials.  Since a retaining wall has been supporting the landscaping, the wall needed to be straightened to continue benefiting.  

The best solution for straightening the retaining wall was to install the GeoLock Wall Anchor system. Wall anchors are installed by digging a small hole in the soil away from your home's foundation. A steel rod is drilled through a one-inch hole in the basement wall and is connected to any earth anchor seated deep within the augured hole. A low-profile wall plate placed on the interior of the basement wall is secured to the rod. The augured hole is backfilled and sod is replaced. All components are then connected and tightened. The retaining wall is now back to performing the job it's supposed to be doing: preventing erosion.

In Lewisport, KY, a family wanted to transform their dark and cold basement into a welcoming space to have hangouts in the future. The basement had water leakage that needed to be repaired to further furnish the space. The family was ready to keep the ball rolling and have the basement of their dreams!

Once the waterproofing was finished in the basement, such as the WaterGuard system and a sump pump being put in, then it was time to take care of the walls. Basement to Beautiful panels was installed across the walls to insulate the area. It was waterproofed with integrated electrical chases and "warm" studs. Wood studs can rot and grow mold where there is no wood in the Basement to Beautiful panel. The basement to Beautiful panels are not a finished wall and need to have a finished system installed over them. The family was ecstatic to see the transformation and the potentiality of ideas for the space.

This Lewisport home was experiencing the common signs of a wall failure problem: stair-step cracking on the inside of their home. Once these homeowners realized that the problem could (and would!) eventually get worse, they quickly gave Healthy Spaces a call to solve the problem.

Our System Design Specialist, Damon Cheatham, concluded that the foundation would need to permanently stabilize the walls by installing PowerBraces. The PowerBrace is designed to support basement walls and allow for potential straightening over time. Some highlights on installing PowerBraces are: their zinc coating makes the entire system resistant to corrosion, clean-cut appearance, and professionally installed. 

With a plan set, Kye Devine and his production team came to the home to start the project.
