In this Before and After comparison, you can see how easy it is to install a Waterguard Perimeter drain interior waterproofing system into even the most complicated basement perimeters. Once the Waterguard system is installed, it is capable of directing both wall and perimeter water to the sump pump system to be removed from the basement. It's practically invisible, too, since the entire system sits below the surface of the basement slab!
"Our basement was a waste of square footage! With growing kids, I needed somewhere for them to hang out with their friends that wasn't right on top of each other. We decided to finish the basement".
This is a common situation for many homeowners in the Fort Knox area. Basements tend to be damp, moldy, and smelly. Thankfully, they don't have to stay that way! Healthy Spaces can transform an ugly waste of space into a beautiful addition to your home.
In this case, the homeowners had the basement stripped down, treated for mold and fungus, then elected to have Zen Wall panels installed because they will not mold or deteriorate. They also installed a Waterguard system to direct wall moisture and ground water into a sump pump system and discharge system for removal. The basement will be a cleaner, healthier place for the kids to hang out!
One of the most important features of a good sump pump system is the discharge line. The Healthy Spaces installation team is putting in solid, rigid PVC discharge line. A rigid discharge line will not crush or deform when the fill soils are replaced and the soil is tamped down. Second, a good discharge system needs to be resistant to freezing. The Healthy Spaces team installed ice guards on this discharge system to prevent freezing and cracking. Third, a discharge line needs to direct water as far as possible from the foundation to prevent groundwater from flowing back into the basement. Fourth, a discharge line needs to have a safe, effective, and clog resistant end cap. The Healthy Spaces team is installing lawnscapes at the ends of these discharge lines.
Efflorescence is a common problem this time of year throughout Kentucky and Indiana. Mineral rich groundwater penetrates the concrete blocks of the foundation wall and evaporates, leaving behind a rust-colored mineral deposit.
The best way to combat this problem is to prevent the basement from flooding by installing a Waterguard system and accompanying that installation with a wall system like ZenWall. These non-warping, mold resistent panels can help direct wall moisture into the Waterguard system and prevent that moisture from evaporating inside the basement. In some cases, the homeowner may elect to have a treatment like Cactus juice applied. Here, you can see the before an after of the effloresence and it's removal and the application of Cactus juice. Once the hooks have been removed from the wall, the wall system will be ready to install. The Waterguard system, previously installed in 2013, has been functioning perfectly! The homeowners are once step closer to the basement of their dreams!
Wet basements are pretty common in Philpot and many cities in Kentucky. With the proximity to rivers and streams, higher humidity, and an average rainfall of 45" per year, basement moisture levels are a common problem. Increased moisture leads to mold concerns and problems with effloresence, mildrew and fungus, and increased pest activity.
These homeowners were determined to stop the basement flooding cycle by installing an interior basement waterproofing system through Healthy Spaces.
The Healthy Spaces installation team installed 179 linear feet of waterguard, a SuperSump sump pump system, and 15' of discharge line. The Waterguard system is installed along the perimeter of the basement and has a special flange to catch wall moisture as well! The water is directed through the Waterguard into the SuperSump, then removed far from the basement through the discharge line.
In this comparison, you can see how the Healthy Spaces installation team is able to direct water from a leaking basement into a perimeter drain system called Waterguard, which is then connected to a high powered sump pump system to keep the basement from flooding.
You can see the gray Waterguard drainage system has been placed in a trench along the entire basement perimeter. Waterguard is a unique system because it doesn't clog like traditional French drains. One of the reasons that this doesn't happen is that Waterguard sits out of the dirt beneath your foundation--it rests on the foundation footer, where it can capture both water coming in from below and water weeping in from the walls. The entire system is cemented in place to ensure a high quality finish. In fact, Waterguard is such an effective system that you can finish your basement and forget that it's there.
We've taken the best concepts from conventional waterproofing methods and combined them to create the most innovative, effective systems in the industry.
Basement water problems are as old as the structures themselves. Water will leak into a basement through any opening it can, including your walls, floors, and the joints between them. Water can even pass through the concrete itself -- which is one reason why basements are notoriously damp, humid spaces.

Heavy equipment is brought in to dig out the entire perimeter of the basement. New drain lines are installed, and sometimes a waterproof coating is applied to foundation walls. This waterproofing strategy is expensive and often damages lawn and garden areas. Exterior drains are prone to clogging with silt and roots over time.
This drain line is installed underneath the basement floor, just inside the foundation walls. The hidden drainage system brings water to a sump pit, where a sump pump automatically pumps it outside. Also known as a French Drain, this system is not prone to clogging; it’s reliable and easy to service.
A hollow plastic baseboard is installed along the base of basement walls to form a drainage channel that directs water to a sump pump system. A baseboard-type drainage system is sometimes recommended when the basement slab is too thin to accommodate a French Drain.
This waterproofing technique involves "painting" basement walls and floors with a waterproof, cement-based coating that's supposed to seal out moisture. Even when applied correctly, this thin membrane usually fails in response to prolonged hydrostatic pressure from outside the foundation.
