Getting Your Leitchfield, KY Basement and Foundation Ready for Fall

Healthy Spaces is here to help Leitchfied, KY HomeownersWith the kids back in school and the temperatures dipping a bit, we can really say that Leitchfield, KY is getting ready for fall. Fall home maintenance is an important series of tasks for any homeowner. We check the seals on our windows, trim back the bushes and trees, and prepare the yard for cool weather. It's important to remember to check your basement and foundation during your fall maintenance, too. Here are three easy maintenance steps to go through this Fall.

1. Clean out your gutters and downspouts

What in the world do gutters and downspouts have to do with your basement and foundation? Well, gutters and downspouts that aren't draining properly away from your home will force water down next to your foundation. This will make your basement walls weep water, leave you prone to basement flooding, and raise the relative humidity leaving you prone to mold and mildew. In addition, the soil around your foundation can sink or swell and cause your foundation walls to crack, bow, and settle.

Be sure to clean out your gutters and downspouts, then measure your downspouts to make sure they are directing the water a minimum of six feet away from your foundation.

2. Check the grade of your yard

As you check that your downspouts are directing the water away from your home, make sure that the slope of your yard is helping with that. Your yard should subtly slope away from your basement and your foundation. Fill in any low spots around your foundation where moisture might gather.

Low spots or an incorrect grade in your yard can direct fall and winter moisture toward your foundation. This will lead to leaks in the basement and possibly even cracks in your foundation.

3. Check the foundation exterior for cracking, deterioration, and signs of water intrusion
