Chris and Shannon from Central City, KY, had some plastic down in their crawl space but every time it rained or the crawl space would get damp, they could smell a musty, wet mud smell throughout the house. They also complained of having daily headaches, sinuses burning, and would occasionally feel nauseous. After calling Healthy Spaces, our System Design Specialist developed a plan with the homeowners that would make transform their musty, unhealthy crawl space into a cleaner, drier, healthier, and more energy-efficient space!
This Central CIty, KY crawlspace was experiencing seasonal flooding, mold growth, and poor energy efficiency. The homeowners had been looking for a permenant solution to the flooding and mold issues. They knew that unless they could reduce the relative humidity, remove the excess groundwater from the crawlspace, and isolate their home from outside humidity. The best solution is to use a waterproofing drainage system with powerful sump pump and overlay the system with CleanSpace.
CleanSpace is a rugged, multi-layer plastic liner, similar to a pool liner. It is guaranteed against rips, tears, and water on top of the liner when installed with a drainage system for 25 years. In fact, CleanSpace is so durable that pests can't pentrate it and it's safe to climb over and use for proper storage.
CleanSpace is an engineered film--blue on one side and white on the other. The white side reflects the crawlspace light to brighten the area and make it easier to see what you're storing.
We've all seen the usual crawlspace door--plywood, old palettes, or scrap wood nailed together to cover the crawlspace opening. Even if the cover is painted or covered in shingles, it's usually warped and degraded by the sun. The metal hinges are usually rusted and in many cases, the hinges have pulled out of the siding. These old crawlspace doors lead to many problems besides just being ugly; they also allow pests, mold spores, and moisture into your home. Since these doors are not airtight, cold winter air will enter creating energy efficiency issues and increasing your heating bills.
Healthy Spaces offers several access door options to their homeowners. These are made entirely out of plastics and foams. Once installed, they create an airtight, waterproof seal between your crawl space and the cold or humid air outside.
This new crawl space doors is called a Turtl. It is constructed of rugged, durable plastic. It can be secured from the outside and it will not warp or fade in the sun. A Turtl is inexpensive, easy to install, and keep your home looking great!
Our client in Livermore, KY, would get water in their crawl space every time that it rained. They also knew that their vapor barrier in the crawl space would need to be replaced as well. After seeing a TV commercial for Healthy Spaces, they gave us a call for a free, no-obligation inspection. After our System Design Specialist, Damon inspected their home, he found a couple of other issues that would also need taken care of.
Because of the high moisture in the crawl space, it caused mold so our team would first need to remediate that. Next, our team sealed all his vents and completed encapsulated his crawl space. Encapsulating your crawl space prevents water vapor and humidity from passing through. CleanSpace vapor barrier has a mold-resistant additive that won't support mildew or mold growth. The combination of these products ensures the crawl space will remain a clean, energy-efficient space and gave our client peace of mind knowing that his crawl space will stay dry!

This family in Maceo, KY never went down to their crawl space. It was an "out of sight, out of mind" thing for them, but what they didn't know is that their crawl space was full of mold. In the before photo, you can see a nasty, old vapor barrier that has torn and become covered in mold. Not only that, but the barrier itself has pulled away from the walls and wrinkled up to the point that it is not functional.
Healthy Spaces was called to help the homeowners get their crawl space back to a healthy and clean state. Our Design Specialist, Bob Roberts, created a plan to keep the crawl space dry and moisture-free. The SilverGlo insulation panels contain tiny graphite particles, which give it that silver shine, and reflect heat back into the crawl space while keeping the cold out. A new plastic liner was also put down on the floor to help keep water and debris out.
The combination of the liner and SilverGlo, This Maceo, KY crawl space is now smell free, mold-free, and warm. By keeping moisture and cold air out she will also have lower energy costs which will save her money as well.
